Attend the opening reception of “Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program,” to get a taste of the beginnings of the guest worker program between the US and Mexico. A bilingual exhibition organized by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, “Bittersweet Harvest” aims to provide insight into the experiences of the Bracero workers. The anticipation has been building all summer. We're only two Saturdays away from the kickoff of the Nebraska football season, but local fans will have a chance to get their football fix starting this weekend at the Durham Museum with the opening of 100 Yards of Glory. The exhibit will offer visitors a rare look at the celebrated and untold stories of Omaha’s football past, dating back to the University of Nebraska’s first football game, a 10-0 victory against the Omaha YMCA men’s team in 1890. The sky will be a superhighway Saturday and Sunday in and around Bellevue as Offutt opens its gates for its annual Defenders of Freedom Open House and Air Show. The ground will shake, engines will roar, and thousands will take advantage of the opportunity to see a wide range of airplanes, both new and old, on display at the base. This year's schedule of performers includes the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, the F-22 Raptor, F-18 Super Hornet, C-17 Globemaster, the Trojan Horsemen T-28 Demonstration Team and Smoke-N-Thunder Jet Car. At 50, the city of La Vista may be decidedly middle-aged, but people of all generations still clamor for the Beatles. 1964 … The Tribute, the nationally renowned Beatles tribute band, will headline the season-ending slot of the La Vista 50th Anniversary Concert Series. The free performance will open with The Rockerfellers. The event is scheduled for Fri., Aug. 20, on the PayPal Campus. The evening will conclude with a fireworks show courtesy of Bellino Enterprises and Night Visions Fireworks. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and The Rockerfellers will take the stage an hour later. Kids Enjoy Rare Carefree Night at the Omaha Children’s Museum

As the warning sirens rang again through the Science and Technology Center, the children started running. Most headed right into the path of danger. Not real danger of course. Nothing more than the 50 or so hollow plastic balls dropped from a trap door eight feet from the ground could inflict. They call it the Super Gravitron, a Wonkaesque science exhibit full of hydraulic lifts, pneumatic tubes, and a lot of other fun ways to get plastic balls to rain down from the sky. It’s a daily occurrence at the Omaha Children’s Museum. What made this particular day at the OCM unique where the children in attendance. They had all faced real dangers most of us couldn’t imagine. Get out of the heat and into some art at the Jewish Community Center Gallery, with ten large-scale acrylic portraits showcasing some of the greatest Jewish Athletes of the 20th century. From American Olympic gold medalist swimmer Dara Torres to Israeli football player Eli Ohana, the work of local artist Mike Scheef celebrates Jewish athletes in swimming, bowling, baseball, basketball, golf, volleyball, table tennis, tennis soccer, and dance. Scheef received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1996 and has displayed his work in numerous local and national venues, including the Hot Shops and BemisUnderground. This Saturday, why not get a little physical exercise and support the Millard Public Schools at the same time. On Aug. 21 the Millard Education Association (MEA) and Millard Public Schools Foundation are putting on the first annual STRIDES 5K Walk/Run for Education. It is a 5K walk/run that will take place at Lake Zorinsky. Registration/Packet pick-up begins near the 156th St. and F Street entrance at 7:15am, with the event start at 8:00am for runners and 8:15am for walkers. Participants can preview the course at www.mpsfoundation.org by clicking on the registration link. Funds raised from the event will go towards school site plan grants funded by the Foundation.
